Thomas&Thomas design philosophy stems from an understanding of the role of the kitchen within modern family life. Today’s lifestyle demands the kitchen be ‘a room to be lived in’. No longer is the kitchen a purely functional setting for mere culinary preparation and storage, but instead the living and social hub of the home. This fundamental understanding allows a Thomas&Thomas design to fulfill the role of providing seamless practicality and striking beauty within your home.
The Thomas&Thomas design experience begins with a designer visiting your home. During this visit we aim to grasp not only the architectural properties of your space, but more importantly understand how you want to interact with your kitchen. As is demanded by the nature of the interior of a family home, our design process is unashamedly personal; through a comprehension of a family dynamic on a person to person level, our designers can begin to conceive a space tailored for your family.
Quality is arbitrary, it can mean something functions for ten years, or simply doesn’t break when you drop it. To us quality means much more than this, quality is a refinement of what you expect from a product; it is the tingle you get when you run your hand along one of our work surfaces or the feeling satisfaction when entering a Thomas&Thomas designed room. To ensure this level of quality, all of our furniture is handmade in England and fitted by experienced cabinetmakers. Your designer will personally oversee every step of the creation and production of your furniture, down to the handpicking of pieces of wood and granite, specific for your design.
The foundation for a Thomas&Thomas design is consideration; consideration of beauty, consideration of your family life. Along side this comes integrity, meaning every component of your kitchen is truly utilised to enhance your own experience of your own home.
Meet Our Team
Howard and Robert, founders of Thomas & Thomas have between them over 60 years of experience in the bespoke kitchen design, manufacture and fitting business.
Howard has always had a keen eye for the symmetrical form, photographing and sketching the proportional aspect of architecture whilst studying Building Technology at College. Holiday times were spent at the many national trust houses helping with historic restoration. Howard began work as a trainee draughtsman, and later turning to kitchen design in 1981. This was a time when the 'split level' oven and hob was the very latest craze. Howard learnt his trade fast as a kitchen designer for a company selling high-end Italian and British kitchens. Howard’s talents as a designer were soon recognized and he was head hunted by an Italian Kitchen Company to run the UK showroom in the South. Family life brought Howard back to the north, working for a well known national kitchen company as their first designer; it was soon acknowledged that Howard had talents not only in design but in the nuts and bolts of the whole operation, drawing on his early experiences in building Howard was soon heading up the contracts and installation team.
Robert's background is design based, studying traditional art and design at Art College. From college Robert worked in the UK design and exhibition industry working as far afield as Moscow, creating colour schemes and interior design concepts for department stores. Extending his design experience Robert moved into set and prop design for television and theatre work for well known productions such as Dr Who, Open All Hours and Last of the Summer Wine, it was during this period that an interest in the design and construction of furniture developed. After moving to Yorkshire and working for a couple of years as a chef in a country hotel Robert’s interest and experience in design led to a career in creating kitchens. When you have worked in a kitchen for a few years, you instinctively know what works and what to avoid when it comes to practical design. While working in kitchen design for a national company in the north of England, Robert met and teamed up with Howard to form Thomas & Thomas in 2001. An ideal working partnership was formed with Robert's creative background and Howard's vast experience in manufacture and installation of bespoke furniture. It's this experience and teamwork that has contributed to the success of the Thomas & Thomas partnership today.
